Sports-Related Oral and Maxillofacial Trauma and Mouthguard Use Jr, Korean National University of Physical Education



Abstract
This study was undertaken to determine the sports-related oral and maxillofacial trauma and use of mouthguard in Korean National University of Physical Education.
Information was also sought regarding the prevalence and aetiology of oral trauma; source of mouthguards; related problems with use; and attitudes towards mouthguards.
A total of 442 questionnaires was completed.

The following conclusions were drawn from this study.

1. Oral trauma was reported by 57.9% among males and 39.0% among females.
2. The aetiology of trauma were sports(52.2%), fights(26.7%), blow(23.7%), falls(18.1%), traffic accidents (8.2%) and others(3.4%).
3. Lip or tongue injuries were the most frequent trauma type(51.3%) and other injuries were luxation (30.6%), crown fractures(28.9%), avulsion(5.2%), jaw fracture(1.7%) and others(7.8%).
4. The rates of ingury upon the oral cavity happened during exercised were boxing(48.4%), basketball (41.6%), taekwondo(38.2%), ski(31.)%), judo(25%), athletic sporsts(22.2%), swimming(18.9%), volleyball(13.3%), gymnastic sports(9.0%) in order.
5. The group of students used or using the mouthguards was 5.9%, 73.1% of the user had been in convenienced because of the equipment.
6. Complaints given by players to wearing mouthguards were displeased(38.5%), difficulty with speaking(26.9%), difficulty with breathing(23.1%), comes out to easily(19.2%), ugly looking(15.4%), xerostomia(7.7%) and others(3.8%).
